A Simple Southern Snack: Tangy Cucumber Salad
Might be a Southern thing, but one of my favorite snacks for tonight is about as simple as it gets: cucumbers, vinegar, salt, seasoned salt, and black pepper.
There’s something so good about the combination of cool, crisp cucumbers and that sharp little kick from vinegar. It’s refreshing, crunchy, salty, and tangy all at the same time. And the best part? You probably already have everything you need sitting in the kitchen.
What You’ll Need
- Fresh cucumbers
- Vinegar
- Salt
- Seasoned salt
- Black pepper
How I Make It
Start by washing and slicing the cucumbers. I like mine sliced fairly thin so they can soak up all that vinegar goodness.
Put the cucumber slices in a bowl and add a splash of vinegar. You don’t need to drown them—just enough to coat the cucumbers and give them that tangy flavor.
Next, sprinkle in a little salt, seasoned salt, and plenty of freshly cracked black pepper. Give everything a good toss.
Taste it and adjust the seasoning until it’s just right for you. Want it tangier? Add a little more vinegar. Like it salty? Add another pinch of seasoned salt. Prefer more pepper? Don’t be shy!
Let It Chill
If you have the patience, let the cucumbers sit in the refrigerator for about 15–30 minutes before eating. The flavors have a chance to come together, and the cucumbers get even more delicious.
But honestly, if you’re hungry, go ahead and eat them right away. I won’t tell!
Why This Snack Hits the Spot
Sometimes the simplest foods are the ones we crave the most. These cucumbers are light enough for a late-night snack but flavorful enough to satisfy that craving for something salty and tangy.
They’re also perfect on a hot evening when you don’t want to cook anything. No stove, no oven, and hardly any cleanup.
Maybe it’s a Southern thing, maybe it’s just a family thing, but there’s something comforting about a bowl of cold cucumbers dressed with vinegar, salt, and pepper.
And sometimes, that’s all you need.
