“Your wife was my…”
He stopped.
I stared at him, waiting.
“My what?” I asked.
He reached into the pocket of his leather jacket and pulled out a small, worn photograph.
He handed it to me.
My hands began to shake.
The photograph showed Emily twenty years younger, standing beside the same Harley he had ridden to her grave every Saturday.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
It was the little boy standing beside her.
I recognized him immediately.
It was our son, Daniel.
Except the picture had been taken years before Daniel was born.
I looked at the biker.
“Where did you get this?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Emily gave it to me the day she asked me to disappear.”
My heart stopped.
He told me his name was Michael. He had known Emily before she met me. They had been deeply in love when they were young, but Michael had made a terrible choice and walked away from her life.
Years later, Emily found him again.
Not to rekindle their relationship.
She wanted to ask him for one thing.
Forgiveness.
Michael explained that Emily had secretly contacted him months before she died.
She told him she was afraid her children would someday discover a truth she had hidden for decades.
Then he handed me an envelope.
My name was written across the front in Emily’s handwriting.
Inside was a letter.
Only six words were written on the first page:
“I’m sorry I never told you.”
I couldn’t breathe.
I looked at Michael.
“What did she never tell me?”
He lowered his eyes.
“Your daughter isn’t biologically yours.”
The cemetery seemed to disappear around me.
Twenty years of marriage.
Two children.
A life I thought I completely understood.
And suddenly, everything I believed about my family was hanging by a thread.
I opened the rest of Emily’s letter.
And what I read next changed everything.
