Growing Up, Did Your Kitchen Have a Dishwasher?
Let’s take a trip down memory lane.
When you were growing up, did your kitchen have a dishwasher?
Or was the dishwasher called Mom, Dad, Grandma, or the kids? 😂
For many families, washing dishes was simply part of the evening routine.
Dinner was over.
Someone cleared the table.
Someone filled the sink with hot, soapy water.
One person washed.
Another dried.
And if you were a kid, you probably learned very quickly that disappearing from the kitchen when the dishes needed doing was considered a dangerous game.
For American families, dishwashers weren’t always the standard kitchen appliance they are today. They existed long before the 1970s, but ownership grew substantially during the middle of the 20th century. So if you grew up in the 1960s or 1970s without one, you were certainly not alone.
And those family dishwashing memories can be surprisingly vivid.
The sound of plates clinking in the sink.
The smell of dish soap.
The dish towel hanging over the oven handle.
The argument over whose turn it was.
And that one glass that absolutely could not go into the dishwasher because Grandma insisted it would break.
Of course, some families had a dishwasher and still washed plenty of things by hand.
Others treated the dishwasher like a magical machine that could solve every kitchen problem.
And some people didn’t get their first dishwasher until they bought their own home.
There’s something funny about how an appliance can become so ordinary that we forget it was once considered a luxury.
Today, many younger people probably can’t imagine finishing dinner and looking at a sink overflowing with dishes and thinking:
“Well, I guess we’re all standing here for the next 45 minutes.”
But for previous generations, that was simply normal life.
And honestly, there’s a little nostalgia in it.
Families gathered around the kitchen.
Someone washed.
Someone dried.
People talked about their day.
Kids complained.
Parents told them to stop complaining.
And somehow, the dishes eventually got done.
