Does Anyone Actually Fold the Clothes as They Take Them Out of the Dryer?
Be honest.
The dryer stops.
You hear that little beep.
You open the door.
Warm, fluffy, freshly dried clothes tumble into your arms.
And then what?
Do you actually stand there and fold every shirt, pair of pants, towel, and sock before putting them away?
Or do you do what the rest of us do?
Throw everything into a basket and tell yourself, “I’ll fold it later.”
And somehow, “later” becomes tomorrow.
Then three days later.
Then suddenly you’re digging through a laundry basket looking for your favorite shirt while pretending it’s completely normal.
Apparently, plenty of people really do put their clothes away immediately—but they’re not necessarily the majority.
A recent YouGov survey found that 35% of Americans say they put clean clothes away right away, while another 30% do it within a few hours. Meanwhile, 31% wait at least a day, including 11% who typically wait two to six days. {“fallbackMarkdown”:”(YouGov)”,”reference”:{“matched_text”:””,”prefix”:null,”start_idx”:1121,”end_idx”:1154,”safe_urls”:[“https://today.yougov.com/society/articles/52696-how-americans-wash-their-clothes/”,”https://today.yougov.com/society/articles/52696-how-americans-wash-their-clothes/?utm_source=chatgpt.com”,”https://ygo-assets-websites-editorial-emea.yougov.net/documents/Laundry_poll_results.pdf”,”https://ygo-assets-websites-editorial-emea.yougov.net/documents/Laundry_poll_results.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com”],”refs”:[],”alt”:”(YouGov)”,”prompt_text”:null,”type”:”grouped_webpages”,”items”:[{“title”:”How Americans wash their clothes | YouGov”,”url”:”https://today.yougov.com/society/articles/52696-how-americans-wash-their-clothes/?utm_source=chatgpt.com”,”attribution”:”YouGov”,”pub_date”:1754006400,”snippet”:””,”attribution_segments”:null,”supporting_websites”:[{“title”:”YouGov Survey: Laundry”,”url”:”https://ygo-assets-websites-editorial-emea.yougov.net/documents/Laundry_poll_results.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com”,”pub_date”:null,”snippet”:””,”attribution”:”YouGov”}],”refs”:[{“turn_index”:0,”ref_type”:”search”,”ref_index”:4},{“turn_index”:0,”ref_type”:”search”,”ref_index”:15}],”hue”:null,”attributions”:null}],”status”:”done”,”error”:null,”style”:null,”fallback_items”:null},”showLoginRequiredCard”:false}
So if your clean laundry spends a few nights in the basket, you’re definitely not alone.
And then there are the people who don’t just fold immediately.
They apparently enjoy it.
They hear the dryer finish and practically sprint toward it.
They pull out a warm T-shirt.
Fold it perfectly.
Then another.
Then another.
Meanwhile, the rest of us are standing nearby thinking:
“Who are these people?”
Some people say folding clothes while they’re still warm helps reduce wrinkles. Clothing-care guidance also recommends folding or hanging garments promptly after drying to help keep them looking neat. {“fallbackMarkdown”:”(Illinois State Board of Education)”,”reference”:{“matched_text”:””,”prefix”:null,”start_idx”:1771,”end_idx”:1791,”safe_urls”:[“https://www.isbe.net/CTEDocuments/FCS-650170.pdf”,”https://www.isbe.net/CTEDocuments/FCS-650170.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com”],”refs”:[],”alt”:”(Illinois State Board of Education)”,”prompt_text”:null,”type”:”grouped_webpages”,”items”:[{“title”:”E65 – FCSR.vp”,”url”:”https://www.isbe.net/CTEDocuments/FCS-650170.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com”,”attribution”:”Illinois State Board of Education”,”pub_date”:1575259187,”snippet”:””,”attribution_segments”:null,”supporting_websites”:[],”refs”:[{“turn_index”:0,”ref_type”:”search”,”ref_index”:19}],”hue”:null,”attributions”:null}],”status”:”done”,”error”:null,”style”:null,”fallback_items”:null},”showLoginRequiredCard”:false}
But here’s the real question:
Does folding count as “putting away”?
Because I have personally met people who will proudly say:
“Yes! I fold everything immediately.”
Then you discover the folded laundry has been sitting on the bedroom chair for four days.
That’s not putting it away.
That’s just creating a much more organized laundry pile.
And honestly?
I respect it.
There is something deeply satisfying about finishing an entire load from beginning to end.
Wash.
Dry.
Fold.
Put away.
Done.
But there is also something deeply satisfying about opening the dryer the next morning and discovering that yesterday’s laundry has magically become today’s problem.
So let’s settle this once and for all.
Which person are you?
🧺 A: I fold everything immediately and put it away.
😌 B: I fold it eventually. Don’t rush me.
😂 C: It stays in the basket until I need something.
🙈 D: I don’t use the basket. I simply have a clean-clothes chair.
And if you chose D…
We need to talk.
Because apparently that chair is now a permanent member of the household.
Recent online discussions show just how divided people are: some insist they fold laundry immediately, while others openly admit their clean clothes can live in baskets, piles, or chairs for days. {“fallbackMarkdown”:”(Reddit)”,”reference”:{“matched_text”:””,”prefix”:null,”start_idx”:3083,”end_idx”:3117,”safe_urls”:[“https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/1lav1im/do_people_really_fold_their_laundry_right_away/”,”https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/1lav1im/do_people_really_fold_their_laundry_right_away/?utm_source=chatgpt.com”,”https://www.reddit.com/r/TooAfraidToAsk/comments/1k28shw”,”https://www.reddit.com/r/TooAfraidToAsk/comments/1k28shw?utm_source=chatgpt.com”],”refs”:[],”alt”:”(Reddit)”,”prompt_text”:null,”type”:”grouped_webpages”,”items”:[{“title”:”Do people really fold their laundry right away?”,”url”:”https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/1lav1im/do_people_really_fold_their_laundry_right_away/?utm_source=chatgpt.com”,”attribution”:”Reddit”,”pub_date”:1749859383.232,”snippet”:””,”attribution_segments”:null,”supporting_websites”:[{“title”:”Do people actually fold their laundry right away or is that just propaganda?”,”url”:”https://www.reddit.com/r/TooAfraidToAsk/comments/1k28shw?utm_source=chatgpt.com”,”pub_date”:null,”snippet”:””,”attribution”:”Reddit”}],”refs”:[{“turn_index”:0,”ref_type”:”reddit”,”ref_index”:14},{“turn_index”:0,”ref_type”:”reddit”,”ref_index”:18}],”hue”:null,”attributions”:null}],”status”:”done”,”error”:null,”style”:null,”fallback_items”:null},”showLoginRequiredCard”:false}
So tell me the truth:
When your dryer finishes, do you fold your clothes immediately—or do you let them sit there until you need something?
No judgment.
We’ve all got laundry secrets.
