Shepherd’s Pie is a comforting, classic baked dish made with savory minced meat, vegetables, and a creamy mashed potato topping. Traditionally made with lamb, it’s rich, hearty, and perfect for a cozy family dinner.

Ingredients

Meat Filling

  • 500g ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (optional)

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until soft.
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, and salt.
  3. Set aside.

2. Cook Meat Filling

  1. Heat oil in a pan and sauté onion, carrots, and garlic.
  2. Add minced meat and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, peas, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  4. Simmer for 8–10 minutes until thick.

3. Assemble

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spread meat mixture into baking dish.
  3. Top evenly with mashed potatoes.
  4. Smooth with a fork and add cheese if desired.

4. Bake

  1. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden on top.
  2. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
