THE DIVIDED HEARTH — EPISODE 22
THE FIRST NIGHT OF POWER
The gates were locked.
The courtyard was quiet.
But nobody in the compound was sleeping.
The family had returned from the hospital with a new reality hanging over their heads.
Ibrahim was now legally responsible for the administrative oversight of the estate.
A fourteen-year-old boy had become the person everyone had to answer to.
But Ibrahim knew something the others didn’t.
Winning the battle was not the same as winning the war.
THE LEFT WING
Inside the left wing, Asabe paced furiously across the room.
Kabir sat on the edge of the bed, his fists clenched.
“This is impossible,” he muttered.
Asabe stopped.
“Your father has humiliated us.”
Kabir looked at her.
“No. Uncle Lawal has humiliated us.”
Amina sat quietly in the corner.
“Mama, what are we going to do?”
Asabe turned toward her.
“What do you expect me to do? Sit here and watch that boy take everything that belongs to my children?”
Hassan finally spoke.
“Mama, perhaps we should just accept Father’s decision.”
Asabe stared at him in disbelief.
“Accept it?”
“Yes.”
“You want us to surrender our family inheritance to a fourteen-year-old?”
Hassan lowered his eyes.
“I want us to stop fighting each other.”
The room fell silent.
Kabir suddenly stood.
“You’re becoming weak.”
Hassan looked at him.
“No. I’m tired.”
Kabir laughed bitterly.
“Tired of what?”
“Tired of watching this family destroy itself.”
Amina began crying.
Asabe looked at her children one after another.
For the first time, she realized that the consequences of her actions were no longer affecting only her.
Her children were suffering too.
But instead of admitting defeat, she whispered:
“This isn’t over.”
THE RIGHT WING
Across the compound, Maryam sat beside Ibrahim.
The master key ring rested on the table between them.
Ibrahim stared at it.
“I don’t know if I can do this, Mama.”
Maryam smiled gently.
“You don’t have to do everything alone.”
“But everyone expects me to.”
“No.”
She placed her hand over his.
“Your grandfather trusted you with responsibility, not perfection.”
Zainab walked into the room carrying two cups of tea.
“Here.”
She handed one to Ibrahim.
“You look like someone who has just inherited the whole world.”
Ibrahim laughed softly.
“I wish.”
Zainab sat beside him.
“Don’t worry. You have us.”
Maryam smiled.
For the first time that day, Ibrahim felt a little less afraid.
Then there was a knock at the door.
Everyone became quiet.
Ibrahim stood.
“Who is it?”
A voice answered from outside.
“It is Baba Lawal.”
Ibrahim opened the door.
Uncle Lawal entered carrying a small wooden box.
He placed it on the table.
“What is that?” Ibrahim asked.
“Something your grandfather asked me to give you when the mandate became effective.”
Ibrahim opened the box.
Inside was an old photograph, a handwritten letter, and a small brass key.
He picked up the letter.
“From Grandpa?”
Uncle Lawal nodded.
“Read it.”
Ibrahim unfolded the paper.
His eyes moved slowly across the words.
Then his expression changed.
“What is it?” Maryam asked.
Ibrahim looked up.
“Grandpa says there is something hidden in this house.”
Uncle Lawal’s face became serious.
“He wanted you to find it.”
“Find what?”
The old man looked toward the courtyard.
“The truth.”
THE HIDDEN ROOM
Later that night, Ibrahim, Maryam, Zainab, and Uncle Lawal stood in front of an old wooden door at the far end of the compound.
Ibrahim had walked past it countless times.
He had never seen it opened.
Uncle Lawal inserted the brass key into the lock.
Click.
The door opened.
Dust filled the air.
Zainab covered her nose.
“What is this place?”
Uncle Lawal stepped inside.
“This room belonged to your grandfather’s father.”
Ibrahim looked around.
Old documents filled the shelves.
Family photographs covered the walls.
And in the center of the room was a large wooden chest.
Ibrahim approached it.
His hands trembled as he opened the lid.
Inside were documents.
Property records.
Old letters.
Bank statements.
And one sealed envelope.
His name was written on it.
IBRAHIM.
He stared at it.
“Why would Grandpa leave this for me?”
Uncle Lawal sighed.
“Because he knew the day would come when you would need to understand why he chose you.”
Ibrahim opened the envelope.
He began reading.
His face slowly turned pale.
Maryam noticed immediately.
“What does it say?”
Ibrahim couldn’t answer.
Zainab moved closer.
“Brother?”
He finally looked up.
“The estate isn’t what we think it is.”
Uncle Lawal’s eyes narrowed.
“What did he write?”
Ibrahim handed him the letter.
The old man read it.
His expression changed.
Then he whispered:
“Alhaji Danlami knew.”
“Knew what?” Maryam asked.
Uncle Lawal slowly folded the letter.
“He knew someone had been stealing from the estate for years.”
Silence filled the room.
Ibrahim’s heart began pounding.
“Who?”
Uncle Lawal looked toward the door.
Before he could answer, they heard footsteps outside.
Everyone froze.
Someone was standing in the corridor.
Then the footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
Ibrahim slowly stepped backward.
“Who is there?”
No answer.
Then the door handle began to turn.
