Applesauce Bread dessert

Posted on June 25, 2026

Applesauce Bread Dessert is a soft, moist, warmly spiced quick bread that’s perfect for breakfast, dessert, or an afternoon snack. Made with applesauce instead of fresh apples, it’s incredibly tender and stays fresh for several days. Enjoy it plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or topped with a simple glaze.

Prep Time

  • Prep: 15 minutes
  • Bake: 55–65 minutes
  • Total: 1 hour 20 minutes

Servings

  • 10–12 slices

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves (optional)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1½ cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Mix-ins

  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • ½ cup raisins or dried cranberries
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips

Optional Cinnamon Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of cinnamon

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Oven

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and lightly flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan, or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk together:

  • Flour
  • Baking soda
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Cloves

Step 3: Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk until smooth:

  • Applesauce
  • Eggs
  • Granulated sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Oil (or melted butter)
  • Vanilla

Step 4: Combine

  • Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.
  • Stir just until no dry flour remains.
  • Fold in any optional nuts, raisins, or chocolate chips.

Avoid overmixing to keep the bread soft.

Step 5: Bake

  • Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  • Bake for 55–65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover with foil during the last 15 minutes.

Step 6: Cool

  • Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  • Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 7: Make the Glaze (Optional)

Whisk together:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Milk
  • Vanilla
  • Cinnamon

Drizzle over the cooled bread before slicing.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with butter.
  • Add whipped cream for dessert.
  • Pair with vanilla ice cream.
  • Toast slices and spread with cream cheese.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar for a bakery-style finish.

Storage

  • Room temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Refrigerator: Up to 1 week.
  • Freezer: Wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before serving.

Tips for the Best Applesauce Bread

  • Don’t overmix the batter.
  • Add chopped apples for extra texture.
  • A pinch of cardamom or allspice gives the bread even more warmth and depth.
